Hyundai’s Next Generation B-Segment Mpv Set For Paris World Premiere

At this year’s Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris on September 30th, Hyundai will celebrate the world premiere of its new B-segment MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle). To be presented as the Hyundai ix20, a sketch revealed today shows the new model as a striking departure from the boxy ‘minivan’ image typically associated with the segment, adopting a more dynamic, sportier profile in line with Hyundai’s reputation as a modern, progressive automaker.

Designed and developed at Hyundai’s European R&D centre in Russelsheim, Germany, the ix20 is the second European car, following the ix35, to adopt Hyundai’s new ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language. The name ix20 reflects the new model’s crossover-like versatility ? a vehicle with the ability to simultaneously serve as a functional people-carrier while providing a dynamic, fun-to-drive experience.

The ix20 will go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2010, supported by Hyundai’s groundbreaking Five Year Triple Care package, which includes a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty; five years of roadside assistance; and five years of free vehicle health checks.

Another model making its world premiere at Paris is the new i10. This upgraded version of Hyundai’s popular city car benefits from a comprehensive set of enhancements in terms of design, specification and competiveness ? including a new 1.0-litre engine with CO2 emissions of just 99 g/km.

The international motor show will also afford Hyundai the opportunity to showcase the latest developments of its Blue DriveTM eco-focused program. The company is targeting global leadership in environmental technologies, and the new models look set to contribute further to reductions in emissions from new Hyundai vehicles sold in Europe.

FHI to Relocate its Head Office to Ebisu, Shibuya-ku in 2014

Tokyo – Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the manufacturer of Subaru automobiles, today announced that the company will reconstruct “Ebisu Subaru Building” and relocate its Head Office in 2014 for the purpose of reorganizing and enhancing its function of headquarter which is currently decentralized in Shinjuku, Ebisu, Mitaka and Omiya, and utilizing its assets effectively. As forty-four years have passed since the construction of “Shinjuku Subaru Building”, where the current FHI’s Head Office is located, and the floor space is not enough for working environment, this transfer will make FHI raise operational efficiency as headquarter.

Furthermore, today FHI, Subaru Kosan Co., Ltd. and Odakyu Electric Railway Co., Ltd. (Executive President: Yorihiko Osuga, Location of Head Office: 2-28-12, Yoyogi, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) have concluded a sales agreement of Shinjuku Subaru Building and its land. The contents of disposal of assets are Site area: 1,600m2, Gross floor area: 20,385m2 and Sales price (excluding taxes): 34 billion yen.

Though transfer of ownership of Shinjuku Subaru Building with the disposal is scheduled to be on April 28, 2011, FHI will continue to operate as headquarter with the leaseback of Shinjuku Subaru Building for around four years. During this period, it will reconstruct Ebisu Subaru Building and complete the transfer of Head office.

Toyota offers synthesized engine sounds for Prius

Toyota now sells an accessory for its Prius hybrid car that generates synthesized engine sounds to alert pedestrians to the presence of the car when it is running silently on its electric motor.

Electric cars produce very little sound at speeds under 20mph and if their number increases there is concern that pedestrians and cyclists will be at risk. In a study conducted by the University of California, pedestrians heard a petrol-engined vehicle moving at 5 miles per hour three seconds before it reached them – by the time they heard an electric car, it had already passed by.

The sound of silence

New laws in Japan for hybrid and near-silent vehicles have prompted Toyota the device for retrofitting to its third-generation Prius.

Toyota describes the new electronic sound as “aimed to alert but not annoy”. It is emitted when the Prius is being driven as an electric vehicle at speeds up to 15mph and would otherwise be near silent.

Europe law may soon follow suit, but there is nothing to say that artificial soundtracks for electric vehicles need sound like a petrol engine. The safety laws may result in cars that sing songs, chirrup like a bird or even make the thumping noise of a pod racer from Star Wars.

FTA seminar keeps operators abreast of fuel tanker regs

The Freight Transport Association’s popular Fuel Tanker Seminar will be held on Tuesday 5 October in Warrington. The event takes place every two years to coincide with regular changes to UK dangerous goods legislation linked to ADR, and is of particular relevance to fleet managers, vehicle engineers and those responsible for specifying road fuel tanker design.

The seminar provides an opportunity for delegates to plan for future legislation developments specific to their operations, and to hear from Department for Transport experts, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and leading industry bodies on tank testing, enforcement and specification issues.

Key sessions include:

ADR changes in 2011 affecting fuel tanker operators
Tank inspection and testing
European Whole Vehicle Type Approval
ADR enforcement and VOSA roadside targeting

2011 Toyota Tacoma Adds New T|X Packages and Other Upgrades

TORRANCE, Calif. – The Toyota Tacoma, the best-selling compact pickup truck in North America since 2005, offers two new packages for 2011 based on a concept truck first shown at the 2009 Specialty Equipment Marketing Association (SEMA) Show. The T|X and T|X Pro packages, available in conjunction with the Off-Road Package, add Toyota Racing Development (TRD) accessories in a unique combination at a special value price.

While other manufacturers are scaling back on or even abandoning the compact pickup segment, Toyota is bolstering its position as the clear leader, adding more value and offering new model variations tailored to the market. Three low-volume models have been discontinued to accommodate the addition of five four-cylinder models in response to a growing focus on fuel economy and cost of operation. All Tacoma grades feature new grille trim.

Select Tacoma models have additional standard equipment for 2011. Air conditioning is now standard on all Regular Cab models. Tacoma’s equipped with the available six-disc CD changer now come with an integrated satellite radio receiver (subscription required). A new Convenience Extra Value Package for Double Cab models adds cruise control, a sliding rear window with privacy glass, remote keyless entry and steering wheel audio controls.

Lexus CT 200h Offers Standard Drive Mode Select with Four Driving Modes

The CT 200h benefits from a new platform incorporating numerous, exclusively developed body, chassis and Lexus Hybrid Drive engineering applications designed to offer customers a choice of distinct driving modes: Sport, when the driver wants a more dynamic experience, or Normal, Eco, or EV to satisfy more typical day-to-day driving needs.

Audi reports best-ever August U.S. sales; brand continues strong arc toward sales record in 2010

HERNDON, Va. - Audi today maintained its 2010 momentum with record August U.S. sales, which surpassed the prior August record set in 2003 by more than 900 vehicles. August 2010 sales of Audi cars and SUVs climbed 14% compared to August 2009, and marked the best monthly sales performance since May of this year.

The August results keep the German luxury automaker on track to set a vehicle sales record in the U.S. by year-end. The existing annual sales record for Audi in the U.S. is 93,506 vehicles sold in 2007.

Overall, Audi sold 9,182 luxury cars and SUVs in August 2010, topping the previous August record of 8,057 vehicles sold in August 2009. Additionally, the automaker posted steady quarter-to-quarter sales increases of more than 5% and nearly 15% over June 2010 and July 2010, respectively.

The August 2010 results were buoyed by the continued extraordinary consumer response by year-over-year sales increases for the Audi Q5 crossover and Audi Q7. For the month, Audi sold 2,675 Q5 vehicles, a 78.8% increase over the 1,496 vehicles sold in August 2009. The Q5 line also enjoyed more than a 25% August 2010 sales jump over July 2010. For August 2010, Audi reported Q7 sales of 560, a 42.1% increase above the 394 vehicles sold a year earlier.

Through the first two months of the second half of this year, Audi has enjoyed significant sales growth. That gain is largely bolstered by continued consumer demand for the Audi A3, which recorded both a 17.7% uptick in sales for August 2010 and 74.8% calendar year to date.

Mitsubishi Motors Reports August Sales

Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) today announced August sales of 4,293, which is the fourth highest monthly sales total for Mitsubishi this year.

Sales were 37 percent lower, compared to last August – a month whose sales were boosted to the highest monthly level since 2008 by the federal “Cash for Clunkers” program.

Two of Mitsubishi’s highest volume vehicles continue to show sales increases year-to-date:

Galant sales are up 28.5 percent for the year
Outlander sales are up 11.3 percent for the year
