Check Your Car’s Fuel Options

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Australia : Australia’s peak motoring group, the Australian Automobile Association, has reminded motorists to ensure they use the correct fuel for their vehicle, following the release of E85 ethanol-based fuel developed specifically for the soon-to-be-released VE Series II Commodore flex-fuel vehicle.

Caltex announced yesterday it would be selling the new Bio E-Flex E85 blended fuel at selected Adelaide outlets in preparation for the release of the new Commodore model.

The Bio E-Flex fuel – a blend of 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent petrol – is the product of a partnership agreement between Caltex and GM Holden, as manufacturers look to develop more environmentally-friendly vehicles.

It will be available at the pump for a price some 20 cents per litre less than unleaded petrol at Caltex sites as it is rolled out across the country.

AAA Technical Services Director, Craig Newland, said that, while it was pleasing to see manufacturers and fuel companies working together to develop more sustainable cars and fuels, motorists should ensure they were putting the right fuel in their own vehicle.

Tiny Iowa Town has Nation’s Highest Concentration of Electric Charging Stations: Local Businessman is Inspiration behind Electric Car Emphasis

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

If you’ve heard of tiny Elk Horn, Iowa, it’s probably because it is home to the only functioning Danish windmill in the world. But the small community is also notable because of the presence of a more cutting-edge technology: four electric car charging stations.

The popularity of electric cars is beginning to sweep the nation, but nowhere so much as in Elk Horn, where you can find the highest concentration of public charging stations anywhere in the world. The community has plans to build four more stations there in the next few months, bringing the total to eight.

Transportation TV spoke with Mike Howard, the 57-year-old businessman who is the brains behind the interest in electric cars in his community. “We are really pre-positioned here way ahead of the curve. We are confident that when electric cars come, we have a location where people can charge their vehicles, enjoy our town, and then be able to continue on their journey.”

Howard hopes to expand the presence of public charging stations along the Interstate 80 corridor, linking tiny Elk Horn, population 600, to hundreds of thousands of travelers crossing the Midwest.

In this Transportation TV report, Howard describes both the advantages and challenges that come with electric cars. They cost less than traditional gas-powered vehicles, and a visit to the charging station only costs about $1 a day, according to Howard. But many electric cars also have a limited range and can take between four and eight hours to fully recharge. As a result, trips in electric cars must be carefully planned.

Inaugural Rallycar Us Rally Cross Win

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Millville, N.J. — The venue may have changed, but the combination of the Tanner Foust and the Ford Fiesta proved once again to be unbeatable, claiming victory at the inaugural RallyCar US Rallycross event.

DBPhoto (1)Last month the combination of Foust and Fiesta dominated X Games 16, winning double gold medals in the RockStar Fiesta. This weekend Foust and Fiesta were once again was the class of the competition winning the Rallycross AWD Main event by a commanding 4.24 seconds ahead of the closest competitor.

“I have gotten to drive some pretty cool events in the Ford Fiesta, but this is the most fun I have had yet in this car,” said Foust who is also running five European Rallycross events this year in the RockStar Fiesta. “This was an amazing event and hopefully the first of many US Rallycross events to come. The Fiesta was awesome and the fact that this is the actual car that I have raced in the European Rallycross events, well let’s just say this Fiesta knows its way around the track on its own and I just basically try to calm it down. This weekend really exceeded a lot of expectations for everyone involved. Then again that is really the opportunity we in RallyCar have is to help change the perception in this country of smaller cars like the Fiesta, cars that here are viewed as economy cars, but in the rest of the world are viewed as performance vehicles.”

Foust wasn’t the only Fiesta driver running this week in the AWD class. He was joined by Ramana Lagemann, a Super Production class driver who struck a deal with Olsbergs MSE to drive a 2008 Fiesta for the weekend. Lagemann qualified third and finished fourth in the Main event, narrowly missing a podium.

Foust To Fly In Rallycar Rallycross Exhibition

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Dearborn, Mich. — It has been just shy of a month since Tanner Foust and the RockStar Fiesta dominated X Games 16 in Los Angeles, winning gold in the Rally Car Racing and SuperRally competitions. Foust will be back in his 600 hp Ford Fiesta this weekend as he participates in the first exhibition for the new RallyCar Rallycross Championship exhibition at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

Anticipation is high for the debut of Rallycross in the United States. On its website RallyCar predicts “The American motorsport landscape will never be the same,” and racing insiders have called this a “game changer.” More than anyone Foust knows what to expect.

fly

“It’s an incredibly challenging and aggressive sport,” said Foust, who has been competing in European championship events this season in the RockStar Fiesta. “The action is non-stop and the fans can’t get enough of it. I often say it is like driving in a real life video game.”

A Rallycross race consists of five rally style cars jumping and sliding on a road course of pavement and gravel. Five drivers line up to start at once, piloting high-horsepower compact cars through race traffic, over a challenging short course that features jumps, unbanked turns, hills and transitions between pavement and gravel. Each car must also take a Joker lap at some point during their heat, a small detour—normally over a jump—that adds a level of unpredictability to the heat’s outcome by changing a driver’s strategy in an instant.

X Games viewers will be familiar with this format from the SuperRally competition, dominated by Foust and the Fiesta, which was a scaled down stadium version of Rallycross.

Foust is a busy competing in various series (RallyCar, Formula Drift, European RallyCross Championship) as well as balancing his ever expanding media persona as co-host of Speed’s Battle of the Supercars; and co-host of Top Gear USA when it debuts on History Channel this fall. It speaks volumes that Foust has tailored his racing calendar around Rallycross and X Games.

Suntrust Ford May Have Inside Line On A Win

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Montréal — The No. 10 SunTrust Ford Dallara of Wayne Taylor Racing will start Saturday’s Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series Montreal 200 from the inside of the second row after qualifying Friday afternoon at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.

Ricky Taylor, co-driver of the SunTrust Racing machine with Italian veteran Max Angelelli, turned a fast lap of 1 minute, 32.123 seconds (105.863 mph) around the 2.709-mile, 15-turn road circuit to take the third spot on the starting grid among 24 car-and-driver combinations entered for Saturday’s two-hour race.

“Before qualifying, I was thinking this isn’t one of those pole weekends, but after the first few laps, I was thinking, ‘Man, the car is good,’” said the 21-year-old, who has two poles and five front-row qualifying results in his nine qualifying attempts this season. “So I was pushing, pushing, and I didn’t think I got the most out of the car on the one lap where it peaked. That was the lap that you had to get your best lap on, and I just think I didn’t get the most out of it on that exact lap. But the SunTrust car is good and I think it’ll be even better tomorrow.

“Remembering from the two other times I’ve raced here, starting inside or outside going into the Turn 1-2(left-right) combination can work both ways. If you have a nice guy on the inside, he’s going to give you room on the outside and you might be able to pass him. But at this level, nobody’s a nice guy, so the inside’s always the best and we’re on the inside, so it’s basically a safe place to start.”

Jon Fogarty won the pole today for the second time this season in the No. 99 Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing Chevrolet Riley, extending his all-time series pole record to 16. The championship-leading No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates BMW Riley, with Memo Rojas at the controls, qualified second. The SunTrust team is in second place in the championship heading into Saturday’s race, trailing the No. 01 team by 30 points, and it leads the third-place No. 99 team by 11 markers.

Gittin Jr.’S 4th Podium Of Season, Still 1st Overall

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Baltimore — During the weekend, Vaughn Gittin Jr. was in sizzling Sin City for Formula Drift Round 5 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Going into the event, Gittin Jr. was first in points overall and his No. 1 goal was to maintain his lead. He not only left the Las Vegas event still leading the points chase for the Formula Drift Championship, but he took the third place spot atop the podium in the second-ever Falken Tire sweep.

It was a scorcher all weekend, but the extreme temperatures were not going to stop Gittin Jr. or his Monster Energy/ Falken Tire 2011 Ford Mustang from tackling the custom-built, high-speed entry course. After throwing down two impressive runs during Friday qualifying, he ended up snagging the fifth place spot.

Saturday’s main event brought out thousands of fans, eager to check out their favorite drivers and to catch all the up-close drifting action. Gittin Jr. was just as excited to chat with the fans, sign some autographs, slap some high-fives, and pass out some limited-edition Mustang 5.0 hats.

For the top 32 elimination round, Vaughn was paired with Drift Alliance Ace Brian Wilkerson. Gittin Jr. led first, holding a solid line and maintaining angle, while Wilkerson hustled to keep up with the Mustang. When it was Gittin Jr.’s turn to give chase, he stuck to his competitor’s door throughout the course and did not let up once. The judges awarded him the win.

Gittin Jr. was matched with another Drift Alliance teammate, Ryan Tuerck, in his battle during the sweet 16. Gittin Jr. led first and Tuerck tried to follow him in towards the wall, but instead took a much wider line causing him to tap the tire wall. Gittin Jr. gave chase next and mimicked Tuerck’s every move while following close behind. The judges conclusion yielded Gittin Jr. the advantage and the win.

In the great eight, Gittin Jr. was paired with Charles Ng, who earlier took out Rhys Millen in the top 16 round. Gittin Jr. led first with a crazy fast initiation and a ton of angle, while Ng pushed to keep up. Ng managed to catch the Mustang by the last turn, but straightened up in the process. Ng led next only to have Gittin Jr. piling on the pressure throughout the course. Gittin Jr. took the win and moved to the semi-finals.

Ford Celebrates Silverstone Hat Trick

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Silverstone, England — Team Aon delivered a near perfect race weekend, having dominated proceedings with three victories from three races at Silverstone in today’s Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship. Having secured pole-position on Saturday the team secured double podium finishes in race one and two, as well as victory in the final race of the day. Tom Onslow-Cole also secured the fastest lap in all three races of the day earning himself a bonus point for each to add to his points haul.

Both Team Aon Ford’s made a clean get away from the front row of the grid in the first race of the day, with Tom Onslow-Cole leading the early stages of the race from pole position. On lap 12, Onslow-Cole encountered a gearbox issue that dropped him back, allowing Tom Chilton to inherit the win. Onslow-Cole’s problem dropped him back into the clutches of championship leader Jason Plato, however the 23 year-old managed to defend his position despite the close attentions of the Chevrolet to make it a Team Aon one-two.

The two Team Aon cars lined up at the front of the grid once again for Race Two, with Tom Chilton this time starting from pole thanks to his Race One victory. With the two Team Aon cars out in front the decision was made to ensure both Ford’s remained in championship contention and so on lap 17 when Onslow-Cole slowed to allow his team-mate to take maximum points. However the close attention of Rob Collard’s BMW and some robust overtaking attempts meant that Onslow-Cole actually dropped back to third, behind the racy BMW, denying the Littlehampton based squad their second one-two of the day.

The third race of the day saw the customary reverse grid, meaning Tom Chilton started from sixth following his Race Two victory, with Onslow-Cole in fourth as a result of his third placed finish. Both Ford car’s once again made clean starts, whilst chaos reigned around them. First there was contact between Martin Depper’s BMW and MacDowall’s Chevrolet, when the two came together immediately after the start, the second Chevrolet was also in trouble at turn one, when Championship leader Plato came together with his arch-rival Matt Neal.
